Romania Business Up-Dates and Opportunities - August 2012

1 - Health Services and Pharma:

- Investors, old and new, have announced plans to invest over EUR150 million in private clinics and hospitals in Romania, some of which should be completed this year and others in 2013 or later, according to data centralized by Ziarul Financiar.

- The 15 largest local drug producers posted EUR315 million in revenue together last year, which accounts for 12% of a market dominated by importers. This means the 15 Romanian pharmaceutical companies have a lot to say in the fight with international giants, which come with much higher promotion budgets and a negotiating power to match.

- Swiss pharmaceutical company Nycomed Pharma estimates its turnover in Romania will climb 10.5% in fiscal year 2012 to about EUR14 million

- The private healthcare services, one of the most dynamic economic sectors over the past years, expect the implementation of the new health law which should trigger an annual 20% growth pace. Thus, this sector may reach to over EUR800 million in 2014 and 2015.

- Romanian private healthcare provider MedLife reported 126 million lei (EUR29 million) in turnover in the first half of the year, up 26% compared with the same interval in 2011

2 - Green Energy:

- Belgian company Electrawinds will build a 100 MW wind power park in Harsova, Constanta county, its second such project on the Romanian market.

- Romanian power supplier CEZ Distribution, a unit of Czech utility group CEZ, has received interconnection applications for photovoltaic power stations with a total capacity of around 1,000 megawatts, according to company data.

- Romania is the country where the renewable energy division of Energias de Portugal (EDP), one of the major European energy groups, recorded the highest growths in the last year, with the Portuguese group having 285 MW of functional wind energy projects, which entail investments of almost EUR430 million.

- The Romanian Economy Ministry will co-finance a photovoltaic energy project in southern Romania, worth 46.4 million lei (EUR10.2 million).

- The scheme granting six green certificates per each megawatt of solar power generated remains valid for the projects done by early 2014.
