Within the Romanian economy, the shipbuilding industry has an important place and represents one of the engines of the development. Ship building in Romania has a long tradition, with shipyards in Constanta, Galati and Mangalia. Romania's access to the Black Sea and the Danube course of more than 1000 km on the territory of Romania contributed to the development of shipbuilding more than 160 years ago. Currently there are 10 shipyards operating in Romania for shipbuilding and for ship repairs.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Economy and Commerce, shipbuilding activity in Romania increased by 40% in 2010 compared to 2009, from 800 million to 1.1 billion. EUR. 98% of the output was exported. Romanian companies participate in important industry events such as Europort (Rotterdam and Istanbul), Nor-Shipping (Oslo).
Romanian shipyards are specialized in manufacturing of commercial transport vessels.
The main types of vessels built are :
- Bulk cargo between 25,000 and 170,000 dwt
- Cargo ships (container ships , Ro-Ro port and general cargo ships transport goods) between 2000 and 18,000 dwt
- Fishing boats
- Tugs / pushers 300 to 60 000 HP
- Barges up to 4500 tons
