The Imports of Organic Foods and Beverages in Romania

The Romanian market of organic / bio food and beverage products is still small, but it grows at a rapid pace under the pressure of local buyers. Supermarkets constantly expand their bio products dedicated areas, while new retail and HoReCa specialised in organic foods and beverages open in the main cities of Romania. Some examples are Biocorner, Ki-Life, Biostil and Naturalia.

According to market players, in 2014 the sales of organic food and beverage products amounted to about 25-30 million EUR. In 2015, the market was expected to exceed 45 million EUR, and by 2017 it could reach 100 million EUR.

The organic and bio products in Romania are sold in supermarkets, hypermarkets, pharmacies and specialized stores selling natural products (like Plafar and Bio Holistic).

Romania’s food, beverages, and tobacco imports went up by 19% compared to 2014. Some of the Romanian importer-distributors of bio foods and beverages are Bio Holistic, BIO Logistic & Distribution Partener, Bio Mania, Biogama Distribution, Prier CD Invest, Quark and Ki-Life Natural.

Bio Holistic is specialised in the import and distribution of organic food, cosmetics and detergents. Its offer includes over 900 bio and raw products: gluten free products, protein bars, chocolate, bread, snacks, chips, biscuits, cereals, vegetable milk, honey, rice, pasta, canned olives, sauces, oil, vinegar, butter, powders etc. Examples of brands imported and distributed by Bio Holistic are: Dragon Superfoods, Obio, Essential, Lifefood, Biona, Germline, Amisa, Simply Raw, Algamar, Biona, Kulau etc. Bio Holistic distributes its products to over 80 stores selling bio and natural products located all over the country, to hotels, restaurants, kindergartens, fitness centres and manufacturers of food supplements. Furthermore, the company sells its products on-line. Bio Holistic has recorded a net turnover of 0.5 million EUR in 2014, up by 50% compared to 2013.

BIO Logistic & Distribution Partener, part of Life Care Europe GMBH, imports and distributes bio food products, cosmetics and detergents. Its range of bio products includes: butter, milk, flour, muesli, sauces, jams, pates, canned vegetables, pasta, coffee, biscuits, protein bars, oatmeal, cereals etc. Examples of imported brands in its portfolio are: Allos, IlNutrimento, Go Vegan, ProBios, Max Sport, Holle, Sante etc. Furthermore, the company has own brand of organic food (BIO All Green). The firm sells its products on-line. BIO Logistic & Distribution Partener has reached a net turnover of 1.7 million EUR in 2014, up by 5% compared to 2013. 

Bio Mania imports and distributes bio products (food, cosmetics and cleaning products). Its range of bio products includes: biscuits, crackers, muesli, cereals, chocolate, juices, tea, wines, sauces, oils, pasta, jams, canned vegetables, gluten free products etc. The company imports bio food from the following producers: FZ Organic Food, Abafoods, Naturgie SAS, Sonnentor, Vifrana, La Finestra sul Cielo, Quattrociocchi, Rapunzel, Sonnentor, Amazing Grass, Taste of Nature, Biotuscany etc. The firm sells its products on-line. Bio Mania has registered in 2014 a net turnover of 0.2 million EUR, up by 29% compared to the previous year. 

Biogama Distribution imports and distributes organic food, cosmetics and detergents. Its offer of organic food products includes: cereals, chocolate, coffee, teas, jams, canned vegetables, spices, sauces, biscuits, sticks, candies, dried fruits, muesli, rice, pasta, juices, oils etc. Examples of brands imported and distributed by the company are: Rapunzel, Zimmermann, Denree, Lebensbaum, Eden, Byodo, BioBon, BioDeta, Dr.Ritter etc. Biogama Distribution distributes its products to organic restaurants, specialised stores selling bio and natural products, online stores or kindergartens. The company sells its products on-line. Biogama Distribution has recorded in 2014 a net turnover of 0.4 million EUR, up by 51% compared to 2013.

Prier CD Invest imports and distributes organic food, delicatessen and wines. Its range of products includes chocolate, truffes, biscuits, coffee, jams, tea, pasta, oil etc. Some of the brands imported by the company include Mathez, Desobry, Lacasa, Rovelli, Valor, Van Houten etc. The company has two stores (Republica del Gusto and VinHala) located in Bucharest and sells its products also on-line. Prier CD Invest has recorded a net turnover of 0.2 million EUR in 2014.

Quark imports and distributes bio food, cosmetics, kitchen devices etc. Its range of bio food includes: coconut butter, flour, oils, honey, protein bars, sauces, canned fruits, canned vegetables, dried fruits, seeds, condiments etc. Examples of imported brands in the company’s portfolio are: Green Coco, Dr. Goerg, Biona, EverTrust, Geo Bavicchi, Raw Health etc. The company has a store located in Bucharest and sells its products also on-line.

Ki-Life Natural imports and distributes bio food, cosmetics and food supplements. Its range of organic products includes: fruits, vegetables, meat, meat products, dairy products, frozen food, cereals, canned food, honey, sauces, biscuits, crackers, protein bars, pasta, oils, teas, bread etc. Examples of imported brands in the company’s portfolio are: Schar, Sobbeke, Geflügelschlachterei Stauß, Linea Natura, Raw Bite, Nairn’s, Zuger etc. The company has a chain of two Ki-Life stores in Bucharest and sells its products also on-line. Ki-Life Natural has recorded a net turnover of 0.5 million EUR in 2014, up by 2% compared to 2013.
