According to company sources, 2016 has been the most successful year in the history of the company. They sold over 50 million electric tools all over the world and increased sales once again. Biomass and Renewable Energies Market in Romania

FRD Center considers that there are numerous opportunities for foreign companies involved in renewable energies technologies, in biomass and biogas utilisation, cogeneration, cleantech, Waste-to-Energy technologies, utilities management and automation, smart grid and smart metering technologies, waste management etc. to do business in Romania.

For tailor-made sector data, B2B matchmaking with players in the Emerging Markets in Europe, for M&A assistance and target origination feel free to contact the FRD Center team at: email: europa@frdcenter.ro or tel: +4021 411 1459/60/61

Funding for new projects, modernisation and rehabilitation is available both from Governmental and EU sources, as well as from private sources. As an example, the Priority Axis 6 under EU POIM program is dedicated to promoting clean energy and energy efficiency for a low carbon economy (total allocation 197.3 million Euro).

Similarly, the National Rural Development Program (PNDR) 2014-2020 with a total allocation of 9,36 billion Euro has a line of financing for investments in agricultural holdings to integrate energy efficiency measures and Renewable Energy Sources.

The measures encourage investments in installations for electrical or thermal energy production by using the biomass residues resulted from own farming activity as well as other sources.

The potential of biomass usage in Romania, as an alternative to fossil fuels, is a reality which attracts serious attention of both local and international players. Also, biogas from manure is a viable option for thermal power for Romania's many animal farms.

The installed capacity of biomass-based energy has increased in 2016 to 105,791 MW from 104,557 MW in 2015.

The production of biofuels and biogas is considered to have a high potential in Romania. In 2015, the production was 1,500 GWh for biofuels and 450 GWh for biogas.

The largest share of green energies in the total electricity production in Romania in 2015 was of hydro power (26%) followed by nuclear energy (20%), wind energy (8%), energy from biomass (1%) and photovoltaic energy (1%) according to Transelectrica data.

In respect to the renewable energy produced in Romania, in 2015 compared to 2014 the wind energy increased by 13.88%, biomass production increased by 2.9%. The most significant increase was recorded in the production of photovoltaic energy, of 22.58%, the generation of this sector totalizing 2.003 GWh.

Waste-to-Energy and energy from biomass is a hot topic in Romania for a multitude of reasons. One of them is the availability of waste and sub-products from the agricultural and forestry sectors. The potential of biomass from manure in Romania is based mainly on swine and poultry husbandry activities as they are the most organized industrial animal husbandry sectors and generate more than 75% of total estimated manure quantities / year.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, in 2016 there were:
•2,081,233 heads of cattle
•4,478,596 heads of pigs
•85,096,537 heads of poultry
l
As for forestry resources for biomass, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics, the total area of the forest land in Romania was 6 544.6 thousands hectares in 2014, accounting for 27.3% of the total country area. According to the same source, the production of fire wood in Romania in 2014 was of 4.86 million m3, while in 2015, it was of 5.08 million m3, 4.5% more than in 2014.

According to ASFOR, in Romania are harvested annually approx. 19 million cubic meters of timber, of which 12 million cubic meters for the industrial processes, and the difference of seven million cubic meters for heating and other uses.

According to the NREAP, the estimations for 2020 of biomass domestic supply of forest wood will reach 3,500,000 m3 per year, the supply of by-products of wood-based industry will reach 4,000,000 m3 per year, while the supply of resources from agriculture and fisheries (by-products) will reach 3,762,000 ton per year.

Currently a number of legislative documents are under preparation, such as the New Heating Law, which debates to set a 50% share of the energy produced (heat) for the domestic / district heating to be obtained from bioenergy sources, and the Biomass Law, whose main purpose is the creation of a transparent and stable framework for investors.

In Romania, the heat market is regulated by the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority. Urban heating is provided by district thermal plants and old-style cogeneration plants running on natural gas and coal or oil. The cogeneration in district heating sector in Romania is being re-discovered as the most promising option to reduce the costs and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of district heating operators.

The Romanian Medical Equipment market, currently estimated at some EUR 500 million, is 90% generated by imports and offers opportunities for foreign manufacturers to export to Romania. In the next 3-5 years, it is expected to grow by approx 5% y-o-y, mainly due to Romania's economic growth and increasing health expenditure both by the Government and private consumers.

According to FRD Center analysis based on official statistics, in 2016, the imports into Romania of Taric 901920 - Ozone therapy, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, artificial respiration, other therapeutic respiration apparatus was 12.3% higher than in 2015. Similarly, the imports into Romania of Taric 9021 - Orthopaedic appliances, including crutches, surgical belts and trusses, splints and other fracture appliances, artificial parts of the body, hearing aids and other appliances which are worn or carried, or implanted in the body, to compensate for a defect or disability were 12.6% higher in 2016 compared to 2015.

The imports into Romania of Taric 9018 - Instruments and appliances used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary sciences, including scintigraphic apparatus, other electromedical apparatus and sight-testing instruments registered in 2016 over EUR 216 million, while imports into Romania of Taric 9022 - Apparatus based on the use of X-rays or of alpha, beta or gamma radiation, whether or not for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary uses, including radiography or radiotherapy apparatus, X-ray tubes and other X-ray generators, high tension generators, control panels and desks, screens, examination or treatment tables, chairs and the like registered in 2016 over EUR 44.3 million.

The market of the private medical services is one of the fastest developing sectors in Romania. According to market sources, the private healthcare market in Romania is currently estimated at approximately 600 million EUR, with the first ten players having a market share of some 40%.

Romania is a market with excellent potential, a strategic location, and an increasingly solid business climate. Its economy is among the EU’s fastest growing. In 2017, its economic growth is expected to reach some 4.5%, having reached 4.8% GDP growth in 2016, following 3.8% in 2015 and 2.8% in 2014.

The Romanian market of medical devices and health equipment, 90% of which is generated by imports, is currently estimated at some EUR 500mil. In the next 3-5 years, it is expected to grow by approx 5% y-o-y, mainly due to Romania's economic growth and increasing health expenditure both by the Government and private consumers, leading to the strong growth of the private medical services market.

There are approximately 300 medical device distributors and commercial representatives, the most important ones representing manufacturers located in the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Japan, China, Turkey, and Switzerland.

FRD Center has extensive specialised d-base of relevant contacts in the medical devices and health equipment sector, of both importer-distributors and direct buyers. On behalf of our Clients - the foreign manufacturers interested to penetrate the local market - we contact the relevant key decision makers with product introduction and B2B matchmaking services.

Romanian healthcare is undergoing considerable reform and development. Both the public health services and the private healthcare system are expected to improve, expand and develop in the next period.

While the private health networks continue to attract foreign investment and acquire local players in order to consolidate their position, the public hospitals receive EU funding and public money for new buildings, development, refurbishment and modernisation.

As an example, recently the private healthcare network Regina Maria launched a new laboratory in Bucharest fitted with equipments that required a EUR 3.5 million investment. The Central laboratory is the first reference center Roche Diagnostic for biochemistry and immunology.

Some of the private hospitals in Romania are: Novogyn, Sanador, Metropolitan, Isis, Polisano, Ponderas, Puls, Euromaterna.
