Foreign investments and crossborder M&A in Romania - the most dynamic economy in Europe



With a GDP growth of 8.8%, Romania is the most dynamic economy in Europe, a gateway to the EU and Eastern Europe and numerous crossborder investments and acquisitions are registering double-digit profits.

According to provisional data published by the National Bank of Romania, in the period January - October 2017 the FDI in Romania reached 4,090 mEUR, some 11% more than in the same period of 2016.

OMV Petrom finished the construction works for two new stations of gas refinement near important production areas, following investments of over 130 mEUR.

Dr.Max, a pharmacy chain operating in the Central and Eastern European region, has signed the contract to take over Romanian pharmaceutical group A&D Pharma. This transaction will turn Dr.Max into the leader of the local pharmaceutical market. Dr.Max is controlled by Penta Investments, an international investment company owned by Czech and Slovak investors.

An investment of 86.6 mEUR will be made in Alba County’s potable water distribution system through the EU’s Cohesion Fund, benefitting 106,500 inhabitants. The project, which is co-financed by the European Union, includes the renovation and expansion of the waste water treatment system and the potable water distribution system in 23 communes in Alba.

Austrian group Voestalpine has acquired the Barum Technik factory in Timisoara, Western Romania, which has been active since 1994. The plant will now operate under the Voestalpine Rotec Coating name and will hire 160 people.


The European Investment Bank (EIB) has announced that it is lending 21 mEUR to the Municipality of Oradea to finance improvements to its urban infrastructure. EIB funds will also support investments targeting Climate Action objectives, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable transport.
