How to reach the local importer-distributors of building materials and home improvement, DIY in dynamic markets such as Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia etc.?

The growth of the Romanian market of masonry elements - bricks and autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) - is expected to register between 5-10% in 2018, after having grown by about 10% in 2017 compared to 2016, approaching the threshold of 200 mEUR.

Deliveries were further sustained by dynamics on the residential market. Overall, the projections for 2018 are positive in the context of the housing market, the main beneficiary of these types of products, continuing to see a strong upward trend, even if the pace slowed down compared to 2017.

Bucharest and the surrounding localities concentrated in 2017 a fifth of the total consumption of masonry materials, which stood at 5.5 million cubic meters, 10% more than in the previous year. The masonry market includes both AAC and ceramic blocks (bricks) and has a total value of 190-195 million euros, of which about 53% represents only AAC, ie almost 100 mEUR.

In this context, the major manufacturers on the market estimate increases between 5% and 10% of their turnover in 2018. In total, some 15-16 companies are active in the Romanian masonry elements production sector, which reported a total turnover of approximately about 285 mEUR in 2017, up 10% from 2016.

One of the main manufacturers of bricks in Romania is Cemacon, with two factories. For the period ending June 30, 2018, Cemacon recorded a 41% increase in net sales compared to the same period in 2017.

Emerging Markets in Europe continue to attract Foreign Investments

Emerging Markets in Europe continue to attract considerable attention from foreign investors and corporate finance. For example, in H1 2018, the foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania has reached 2.194 bn EUR, up by 29.44% compared to the same period of 2017, according to the National Bank of Romania.

Romania’s economic growth, booming IT and manufacturing sector, as well as sizeable domestic market are driving growing inward foreign investment.

Romania is cementing its position as a major FDI hotspot in eastern Europe, with its appeal as a low-cost manufacturing base being augmented by a growing domestic market of 19 million people – the largest in Eastern Europe. In 2017, Romania was notably the fastest growing economy in the EU, and the second largest recipient of foreign investment after the Czech Republic and Poland, according to figures from Unctad.

The country’s long established industrial sector has typically attracted the lion’s share of FDI. However, more recently, Romania’s young, tech-savvy workers have contributed to the development of the IT and services sectors, which are now major recipients of foreign investment. More details at https://www.fdiintelligence.com/Locations/Europe/Romania/Romania-sees-fast-growth-but-slow-reform

Some examples of recent FDI in Romania
researched by FRD Center are:

The Turkish automotive components manufacturer Dogu Pres intends to invest 10 mEUR in the construction of a factory of parts for diesel and petrol injectors in Iasi, NE Romania. In the second stage of the project, the company plans to invest in the production of various types of auto pumps in Iasi.

The Hungarian company Terran has inaugurated in June 2018 its first factory in Romania, following an investment of 5 mEUR. Located in Campia Turzii, NW Romania, the concrete tile factory covers an area of approximately 2,500 sqm and can produce 70 tiles / minute, with an annual capacity of 10 million tiles.

The Japanese Miniso retailer, with a turnover 0f USD 1.8 billion in 2017, has entered Romanian market and intends to open more than 40 stores.

Improved living standards and a disciplined workforce are just two factors in Poland’s strong FDI growth. When measured by the value of investment projects announced in 2017, Poland is ranked as the third highest destination in Europe. The highest amount of greenfield investment in Poland announced in 2017 was in the construction, ICT and automotive sectors. Transport and business services also proved to be magnets – projects from these sectors dominated in potential new projects currently being implemented by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH).

More details at https://www.fdiintelligence.com/Locations/Europe/Poland/The-story-behind-Poland-s-FDI-success

Some examples of recent FDI in Poland
researched by FRD Center are:

Umicore Belgium has announced in June 2018 it had chosen Poland for its first plant in Europe manufacturing cathode materials for electric vehicles. The factory will be based in Nysa, Poland and is due to start deliveries in late 2020. The investment will create up to 400 jobs in the first phase.

The Italian compounder Sirmax will invest 30 mEUR in the construction of a second production plant in Kutno, Poland, with an extended product range. In the past two years, Sirmax has doubled the polypropylene compound capacity at its existing facility in Kutno to 80,000tpa.

According to CEIC, Czech Republic's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) increased by 532.6 USD mn in May 2018. According to the Government Agency for Foreign Direct Investment, the Czech Republic ranks first among central and eastern European countries in terms of FDI stock and per capita inflows. This is due to the introduction of investment incentives, the presence of skilled and inexpensive labour, and the geographical advantages of the Czech Republic, which is ranked 30th out of 190 countries in the World Bank's Doing Business 2018.

Some examples of recent FDI in the Czech Republic researched by FRD Center are:

The French company Valeo invests around 35 mEUR to construct a new plant in Rakovnik, the Czech Republic to manufacture sophisticated key components for self driving vehicles and automated parking. The new 13,300 sqm facility, due to be opened in 2019, will be equipped with 25 production lines.

The Czech refinery and petrochemical company Unipetrol, part of PKN Orlen Group Poland, invests 330 mEUR to construct a new 270 kilotonne per annum polyethylene plant at its complex in Litvinov, the Czech Republic.

The other Emerging Markets in Europe, such as Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Turkey, Serbia, are also attracting foreign investments and corporate finance into current operations in the market. FRD Center has been researching the recent corporate developments and foreign investments. According to the FRD Center research, some of them are:

The German blow moulding and packaging machinery producer Krones has begun in August 2018 to build a new manufacturing plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The new facility will manufacture machinery components and assemble line parts and is expected to start the production in H2 2019.

The Swiss company Lonstroff invests around 43 mEUR to build a medical parts production plant in Slovenia. The factory, which is scheduled to be completed by mid-2020, is expected to create 180 jobs.

The German auto components manufacturer Vorwerk Autotec has begun in July 2018 the construction of a plant to produce car suspension and sealing components in Serbia, with an overall investment of 43 mEUR.

The Austrian insulating material manufacturer Austrotherm has invested 2 mEUR to establish a new production plant for expanded polystyrene (EPS) panels in Turkey. The 6,200 sqm leased facility in Ankara has been launched in March 2018.

Jaguar Land Rover moves in H2 2018 the production of Land Rover Discovery from UK to Slovakia. The company has invested approximately 1.4 bn EUR in building the plant in Nitra, Slovakia which is expected to have the annual capacity of 300,000 units.

According to a FRD Center analysis based on data from Eurostat, the Romanian imports of TARIC 3101: animal or vegetable fertilisers, whether or not mixed together or chemically treated; fertilisers produced by the mixing or chemical treatment of animal or vegetable products in the first 5 months of 2018 went up by 29% compared to the first 5 months of 2017, reaching approximately 7 mEUR.

According to the same analysis, the imports of TARIC 3105 in Romania - Mineral or chemical fertilisers containing two or three of the fertilising elements nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; other fertilisers; goods of this chapter in tablets or similar forms or in packages of a gross weight not exceeding 10 kg - reached approximately 91 mEUR in the first 5 months of 2018, up by 5% compared to the first 5 months of 2017.
