Retail turnover continues to grow above the EU average in Emerging Europe thanks to purchasing power increase

In 2017 compared to 2016, the purchasing power of Romanians registered the highest growth rate among the European Union member states: 7.8%, according to GfK. Romania is the 2nd largest market in Central Eastern Europe after Poland.

Emerging Europe retail turnover has registered quite high growths in 2017. The Czech Republic (+9.8%) and Romania (+9.3%) are leading the dynamics.

In 2018, mainly due to continued revenue growth, GfK expects robust retail turnover growth rates for Romania (+7.5%), Estonia (+6.8%), Czech Republic (+6.5%), Bulgaria (+5.3%) and Hungary (+6%).

The population expenditure in retail of total expenditures puts Romania close to the European average.
