Analysis of the Modern Food Retailers in Romania


International food retailers record solid turnover in Romania in 2017
According to the FRD Center analysis based on official financial data, the international food modern retailers operating in Romania have recorded solid turnover figures in 2017. The biggest y/y net turnover increases in EUR in 2017 have been recorded by:
  • Profi:         +31%
  • Carrefour:  +17%
  • Lidl:          +15%
Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in Romania: +7% in first 5 months of 2018
According to the FRD Center research using data published by the National Institute of Statistics, the retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco in the first five months of 2018 in Romania have increased by 7% as gross series compared with the same period of 2017.

Retail trade volume in Romania: second highest increase in EU in May 2018 vs. May 2017
According to Eurostat, in May 2018 compared with May 2017, the volume of retail trade has increased by 7.1% in Romania, this representing the second highest increase among EU Member States, after Hungary (+7.7%).

Furthermore, the retail turnover volume (excluding the trade with motor vehicles and motorcycles) in Romania in May 2018 compared to April 2018 has increased as gross series by 4.1%, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

Imports of food and live animals: +4% in first 4 months of 2018
According to the FRD Center research based on official data from the National Institute of Statistics, in the first four months of 2018, the imports of food and live animals in Romania have increased by 4% compared to the similar period of 2017.

Furthermore, the imports of food, beverages and tobacco in Romania have reached 6.576.9 mEUR in 2017, up by approximately 12% compared to 2016.

No of new stores opened in Romania in H1 2018 - examples
According to the FRD Center analysis, Profi, owned by Mid Europa Partners PE fund, is the most dynamic retail network in Romania, with around 80 new stores opened in the first six months of 2018. Second comes Mega Image with 26.

Mega Image opens store in Timisoara with area for bio products in June 2018
At the end of June 2018, Mega Image, part of Ahold Delhaize Group, has launched its first store in Timisoara (Western Romania), reaching 620 units at national level. With the total surface of around 900 sqm, the new store has a dedicated area for bio and organic food and non-food products, called  Equilibrium Health & Wellness”.

Lidl reaches 227 units in H1 2018
Lidl, part of Schwartz Group, has launched a new store in Bucharest at the end of June 2018, reaching 227 units at national level. The new unit has a selling space of approximately 1,300 sqm and includes a green area of over 1,300 sqm.

Penny Market opens store with green roof in June 2018
Penny Market, part of Rewe Group, has launched a new store at the end of June 2018, reaching 225 units at national level. The new unit is an innovative store with green roof, located in Mangalia (SE Romania). This is the second Penny Market store with green roof on the domestic market.

Carrefour Romania introduces 100% biodegradable bags in June 2018

At the beginning of June 2018, Carrefour Romania has started to introduce 100% biodegradable bags in its retail network at national level. The new bags are developed by a local producer using natural polymers. Carrefour is the first retailer in Romania to introduce 100% biodegradable bags.

Paco Supermarkets reaches 11 stores in H1 2018

The local food retailer Paco Supermarkets, controlled by a Romanian entrepreneur, has opened in June 2018 a new store in Focsani (SE Romania), reaching 11 units. It has a “black store” concept, using the dark gray and black chromatic. The store has the total surface of 700 sqm.

Kaufland opens tent hypermarket in Mamaia in June 2018

Kaufland has opened in June 2018 its first hypermarket on the Romanian seaside. It operates in a tent located in the Mamaia resort. This is the second tent hypermarket opened by Kaufland, after the one in the Sovata balneoclimatic resort in 2017. The new summer hypermarket is tailored to the needs of the holiday customers, has a commercial surface of 1,400 sqm and remains open until 15 September 2018.

Valeputna launches gourmet store in April 2018
Valeputna has launched in April 2018 a gourmet store in Baneasa Shopping City in Bucharest. The store sells own gourmet fish products (Valeputna brand) and also international gourmet products. Valeputna is a start-up established in 2016, following an investment of 550,000 EUR. It has a fish processing unit in Valea Putnei (NE Romania).

Carrefour Romania’s sales increase by 10.6% in Q1 2018

The sales of Carrefour Romania have increased by 10.6% in Q1 2018 at constant exchange rates and by 7.7% like-for-like, driven by an increase in volumes, to 486 mEUR.

RealFoods launches a bio store in Bucharest in 2017
RealFoods, founded by Romanian entrepreneurs, has launched a store in Bucharest at the end of 2017. The store is focused on bio and gourmet products and traditional food from local farms and producers. RealFoods targets to open a new store in 2018 and to diversify its range of products.

Diana launches Diana Gourmet store in 2017
Controlled by Romanian individuals, Diana is one of the main local food retail chains operating on the domestic market. It has launched in 2017 the “Diana Gourmet” store in Ramnicu Valcea (SW Romania). The store is focused on premium and bio products. Diana targets to introduce gourmet products in 2018 also in other stores in its network due to the existing demand from the customers. The Diana retail chain has recorded a turnover of approximately 40 mEUR in 2017, up by around 10% compared to 2016.
