New retail trade records in Emerging Europe: Romania, Lithuania, Hungary and Bulgaria

According to Eurostat, in June 2018 Romania posted the highest y-t-y increase of retail trade among all EU members: +7.8%. It was followed by Lithuania (+7.2%), Hungary (+6.1%) and Bulgaria (+6%).

In 2018, Euler Hermes estimates the value of the modern Romanian retail market at some 17-20 bnEUR. The consumption y-t-y growth in 2017 was over 10%. Romania is the most dynamic large market in EU and a major importer of foods, FMCGs, white goods and electronics.

The Romanian modern retail market is dominated by foreign supermarket chains such as Profi, Kaufland, Mega Image, Carrefour and Auchan. The local modern grocery chains are represented mainly by Annabella, Merkur and Paco Supermarkets. Retail sales growth also contributed to the expansion of modern retailers: over 350 new stores have opened in 2017.

The Hungarian retail trade went up 6.1% y-t-y in June 2018.

Some of the main foreign supermarket chains operating on the Hungarian market are Tesco, Spar, Auchan and Lidl. Important local supermarket chains in Hungary include Coop, CBA and Real.

Second after the Romanian one, the growth registered by the Lithuanian retail trade was of 7.2% in June 2018 vs. June 2017.

The Lithuanian modern retail sector is dominated by local supermarket chains. Some of the main ones include Aibė, Maxima and IKI. As for foreign supermarket chains operating on the Lithuanian market some of the strongest are RIMI, Lidl, Narvesen and Prisma.

Compared with June 2017, the Bulgarian retail trade volume went up 6% in June 2018.
Foreign supermarkets present on the Bulgarian market include CBA, Billa, Kaufland and T Market, while main local supermarket chains operating in Bulgaria are Fantastico, ProMarket and Triumf.
